JakArt@2001 – International Arts, Cultural & Educational Festival
June 2001
organize by ruangrupa, which is part of the first ‘Jakarta Art Festival 2001’. The main subject for this project is the art activities based on the act of exchange, intervention, negotiation, and negation in the public space. The project divided by four; site specific, video art, mural, and poster. Involving more than 50 artists [individual and group] from Jakarta, Bandung, and Yogyakarta. The whole project was done in June, with two months in advance for the research, documentation and preparation. The project brought up the question of artist’s position in the society and questioning the public space in urban environment. During the project we have many problems with the authority [city government] for the permissions. This issue becomes very important, how art/artists should negotiate in public space like Jakarta where its still “owned” by the authority and still worried about the inner dynamics of society. There are very good respond and support from the people in the city and the media through all the critical publications towards the city government.
