In this workshop we invite two groups from Yogyakarta which is intensively works in public space, these two groups are: Lembaga kerakyatan Taring Padi and Apotik Komik, mass media always confront them as two groups with different standpoint to see the public art. The workshop took place in Hanafie studio (situated in Depok; in a suburb of Jakarta), and these two groups were stay for two weeks together, during the workshop ruangrupa arrange the debate between these two groups and two other speakers with different discipline and perspective. The speakers are Marco Kusumawijaya [Architect, Urban city researcher] and FX Harsono [artist, and art critics]. In the end of the workshop two groups who participate present their works and discuss it on ‘open debate’ at Japan Foundation. During the workshop Taring Padi intensively working in public space and directly involve with the people around Ciliwung river [it’s a big slum area in the side of Ciliwung river-big river in Jakarta], on that site Taring Padi make a big ballyhoo with all the pictures inspired by the situation and people who live on that specific location, and they also work together with the people who live there. In this project ruangrupa have a lot of help and support from Ciliwung’s Community [Komunitas Sanggar Ciliwung], organized by Romo Sandyawan who support urban and poor people live in that area. The Apotik Komik was focused on observation of public transport in Jakarta. They come up with different approach about how to treat the bus as a main public transport in Jakarta; the idea is to cover the bus with the parody and satire picture of bus user in Jakarta.
